Naples experienced its most powerful earthquake in four decades after a magnitude 4.6 tremor struck the southern Italian city, causing widespread disruption.

The quake prompted residents to flee buildings and triggered major delays to local train and metro services. Reports also indicated isolated power outages across parts of the city.

The main tremor was followed by three smaller aftershocks, each registering below magnitude 2. The epicentre was located near Bacoli, about 10 miles west of Naples, at a depth of roughly three miles.

Italian news agency ANSA described the event as the most intense in the region in 40 years.

Pozzuoli Mayor Luigi Manzoni confirmed there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. “The earthquake we warned of was strong,” he said, “but we are monitoring the situation closely. Volunteers are already checking conditions on the ground.”

Naples sits in a seismically active volcanic region at the convergence of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates. A similar quake, measuring magnitude 4.4, struck the area in March 2025.
