Mother Accepts Degree on Behalf of Glasgow Student Who Died After Marking Error

Glasgow — The mother of a University of Glasgow student who died after being incorrectly told he would not be eligible to graduate has collected his degree in an emotional ceremony that has renewed scrutiny of marking and assessment processes in higher education.

Ethan Scott Brown had been informed he could not graduate after receiving the wrong grade in one of his courses — an error that was only discovered after his death. The corrected result confirmed that Ethan had, in fact, met the requirements for graduation.

His mother accepted the degree on his behalf, paying tribute to her son while highlighting the devastating consequences of academic errors and the pressures faced by students navigating university life.

Ethan’s case has prompted widespread sympathy and concern, with calls for universities to strengthen safeguards around marking accuracy, student communication and mental-health supports.
