At the invitation of Minister of Environment and Ecology Mr TSE Chin-wan of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the 17th Eco Expo Asia took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 14 to 17 December 2022, attended by Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi and party.
On 14 December, the Union Minister in his speech said that Myanmar has many opportunities for ecosystem-based development like other countries in the Asian region, adding that Myanmar is joining hands with regional countries in solving the climate change; and controlling environmental pollution.
In order to achieve sustainable development of Myanmar, strong policy and strategic plans on climate change mitigation and carbon balance are being implemented.
According to the Paris Agreement, “National Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Action Plans (NDCs)” were presented in 2021, and Nature Based Solutions such as establishment of permanent forest areas to achieve the 2030 carbon emission reduction goals, forest plantations, and establishment of nature conservation areas. Green development campaigns involving the public are being carried out, he said.
A green economic policy framework has been developed and the development of the renewable energy sector for the development of the clean energy sector. Energy production from waste and the development of green transport and communication sector are being carried out.
Next the Union Minister along with guests and representatives looked around the green-based project galleries, the exhibitions on eco-friendly products, air quality improvement booths, waste recycling and energy production, agro-waste-based energy production, galleries on green building development, green transportation such as electric car, galleries of electric and gas hybrid cars and hydrogen fuel cars.
On 15 December, the Union Minister met with HK SAR Government, Minister of Environment and Ecology Mr TSE Chin-wan.
They discussed a carbon-free electricity generation sector to achieve Hong Kong’s 2050 goal of carbon neutrality, development of green buildings and energy saving sector, actions in four priority areas such as green transportation sector and waste reduction sector.
The Union Minister discussed the conditions for bilateral technical cooperation and capacity building on green development.
Likewise, he met with the officials of the Hong Kong-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce on 14 December and discussed the issues of increasing green investments.
He also attended discussions on the carbon balance and circular economic development, development of green buildings and energy saving, development of the carbon market and the development of the hydrogen energy-based transportation sector from 15 to17 December.
The Union Minister and party returned to Yangon by air yesterday afternoon.—MNA
