📍 Paris, July 9, 2025 — French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI is reportedly in early-stage discussions to raise up to $1 billion in equity funding, with Abu Dhabi-based MGX and other global investors participating. The company is also negotiating hundreds of millions of euros in debt financing from French institutions, including Bpifrance SACA, a previous backer.

💡 Strategic Role in European AI Sovereignty Mistral AI is central to President Emmanuel Macron’s €109 billion initiative to establish AI sovereignty across Europe, countering dominance from U.S. firms such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. The startup specializes in open-weight large language models and has positioned itself as a European alternative in the generative AI space.

🏗️ Infrastructure Expansion In partnership with MGX and Nvidia, Mistral AI plans to build Europe’s largest AI data center campus in France. The project aligns with a broader commitment from the UAE, which pledged up to €50 billion for AI infrastructure in France during President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit earlier this year.

📈 Funding History and Valuation Mistral AI previously raised €600 million in 2024, led by General Catalyst, boosting its valuation to nearly €6 billion. The current funding round, if finalized, would significantly expand its capital base and support the launch of Mistral Compute, a vertically integrated AI cloud platform.

The outcome of these talks could further solidify Mistral’s role as a cornerstone of Europe’s AI ambitions and reshape the continent’s digital infrastructure landscape.
