Dublin, 2 August 2025 – Yesterday, Robert Troy TD, Minister of State at the Department of Finance with responsibility for Financial Services, Credit Unions, and Insurance, welcomed Canada’s Ambassador to Ireland, Dennis King, to the Department of Finance for a bilateral meeting.

Discussions focused on the strong trade and investment relationship between Ireland and Canada, particularly the increasing involvement of Canadian financial institutions in Ireland’s international financial services sector.

Ireland hosts operations from four of Canada’s ‘Big Five’ banks:

  • Scotiabank, present since 1966 and now its primary EEA relationship manager based in Dublin
  • Bank of Montreal (BMO)
  • Toronto-Dominion (TD)
  • National Bank of Canada

These firms maintain significant capital markets, treasury, corporate banking, and compliance operations in Dublin. Additionally, Great-West Lifeco, one of Canada’s leading insurers, owns Irish Life, Ireland’s largest life insurance company.

Trade between Ireland and Canada exceeds €10 billion annually, with:

  • 75 Canadian companies operating in Ireland, employing over 15,000 people
  • More than 400 Enterprise Ireland client companies active in the Canadian market, supporting 6,000 jobs

The meeting also explored areas for further collaboration, especially under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and in relation to Ireland’s forthcoming Ireland for Finance strategy.
