Minister Richmond Embarks on Southern Africa Visit to Strengthen Development and Diplomatic Ties

On July 17, 2025, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora Neale Richmond TD began a multi-country visit to Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, aimed at deepening Ireland’s development cooperation and diplomatic engagement across Southern Africa.

🌍 Strengthening Bilateral and Development Partnerships

In Zambia and Zimbabwe, Minister Richmond will:

  • Meet with political leaders and members of the Irish diaspora
  • Visit Irish Aid-funded programmes focused on girls’ education, women’s empowerment, and livelihoods
  • Engage with development partners such as Build it International, SERVE, and the Global Fund
  • Attend a ceremony marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Zambia

Key site visits include:

  • An Irish Aid-supported education and empowerment initiative (July 18)
  • Chegutu District Hospital’s HIV treatment clinic and Maternal and Neonatal ward (July 20)

🌐 Ireland’s Role in the G20 Development Agenda

On July 24, Minister Richmond will represent Ireland at the G20 Development Working Group Ministerial Meeting in South Africa, where Ireland participates as a guest country under South Africa’s G20 Presidency.
Discussion topics will include:

  • Universal social protection systems
  • Illicit financial flows and their impact on development financing

Minister Richmond emphasized Ireland’s enduring commitment to inclusive development:

“Ireland is committed to building and strengthening our trade and development relations throughout Africa. The work of Irish Aid and our partners continues to deliver meaningful impact for those furthest behind.”

He also reaffirmed Ireland’s advocacy for equity in global development:

“The importance of reaching those furthest behind is something I strongly advocate for and intend to pursue at the G20 in South Africa.”
