Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, led Ireland’s delegation at the G20 Tourism Ministers’ meeting held on 12 September at Kruger National Park, South Africa. Ireland participated as a guest country at the invitation of the South African Presidency.
The meeting concluded with a ministerial declaration reaffirming the importance of multilateral cooperation and placing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the core of global tourism policy. The declaration emphasized tourism’s role in promoting sustainable development, economic resilience, employment growth, and poverty reduction.
Ministers also committed to developing transparent financing mechanisms to support tourism-led development, particularly in underserved regions.
Minister Burke engaged with counterparts from G20 member states, guest nations, and international organizations including the OECD. He highlighted Ireland’s commitment to inclusive growth, local investment, and community-based tourism, and welcomed the opportunity to share Ireland’s policy approach and values.
Burke praised South Africa’s leadership in spotlighting the priorities of the Global South and expressed Ireland’s interest in future participation in the G20 process.
