Minister Announces €330,000 Funding to Boost Outdoor Swimming Across Ireland

📍 Dublin, July 11, 2025 — Minister for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy Jennifer Murnane O’Connor has announced €330,000 in funding to support outdoor swimming initiatives nationwide. The investment is part of the Healthy Ireland programme, now in its second year, and aims to improve accessibility, safety, and inclusivity at designated swimming locations across Ireland.

🏊 Funding Objectives The funding will be administered by Sport Ireland and allocated to projects that:

  • Enhance access to swim sites
  • Develop or upgrade changing facilities
  • Procure equipment for people with disabilities

Minister Murnane O’Connor emphasized the health and social benefits of outdoor swimming, stating:

“Swimming outdoors is fantastic for our physical and mental health and wellbeing… This initiative will help more people enjoy Ireland’s rivers, lakes, beaches, and outdoor pools.”

📈 National Swimming Strategy Alignment Sport Ireland CEO Úna May welcomed the funding, noting its alignment with Ireland’s first National Swimming Strategy. According to the Irish Sport Monitor 2024, swimming is the second most popular participation sport in the country, offering broad opportunities for engagement across all demographics.

🗺️ Local Collaboration The initiative builds on the success of 2024, when funding supported 26 projects nationwide. Local Sports Partnerships and authorities will again play a key role in identifying and implementing improvements at swim zones.
