Meta has unveiled plans to build a cutting-edge $10 billion artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, which will be the largest of the company’s 20 data centers worldwide. The new facility is poised to play a pivotal role in supporting Meta’s AI-driven technologies, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Threads. The construction of the 4 million square foot center is set to begin later this month, with a completion target of 2030.
Strategic Location and Economic Impact
The decision to build the data center in Louisiana reflects a deliberate effort to take advantage of the state’s infrastructure, business-friendly climate, and strong community support. According to Kevin Janda, Meta’s Director of Data Center Strategy, Richland Parish was chosen for its reliable access to power, favorable business environment, and enthusiastic local partners who have helped drive the project forward.
“The partnership with Louisiana will allow Meta to continue advancing human connection through technology, while also contributing to the long-term vitality of the local community,” Janda stated.
Once operational, the center will be optimized to handle the vast AI workloads Meta uses to drive its platforms, marking a significant step in the company’s technological evolution. This new facility will enhance the performance and efficiency of Meta’s services while simultaneously providing a boost to Louisiana’s burgeoning tech sector.
Powering the Future with Renewable Energy
Meta has made a strong commitment to sustainability, ensuring that the data center’s energy use will be fully matched by 100% clean, renewable energy. The company is working closely with Entergy Louisiana, the state’s primary utility provider, to integrate at least 1,500 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy into the grid. This collaboration forms part of Meta’s Geaux Zero program, which aims to make its operations more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
In addition to addressing the energy demands of the data center, Entergy is making significant investments in new, clean power plants to accommodate the growing needs of the facility. Meta has also pledged to contribute up to $1 million annually to Entergy’s low-income ratepayer support program, with Entergy matching that commitment.
This partnership between Meta and Entergy is a critical component of the data center’s success, highlighting the shared vision of both companies to foster economic growth while promoting sustainability. “We are not only delivering the energy needed today but building infrastructure that will support Louisiana’s future,” said Phillip May, Entergy’s President and CEO.
Local Economic Growth and Job Creation
The data center project is one of the largest private capital investments in Louisiana’s history. According to the Louisiana Economic Development Agency, the venture is expected to generate significant economic activity, stimulate job creation, and revitalize the surrounding rural area. Gov. Jeff Landry emphasized that Meta’s investment would establish the region as a key player in the state’s growing tech sector and provide new opportunities for Louisiana workers.
“This project not only strengthens Louisiana’s tech industry but also brings high-paying jobs and revitalizes a region that has long been overlooked,” Gov. Landry remarked. “The new tax reform legislation passed by the State Legislature was crucial in securing this deal and positioning Louisiana as an attractive location for major tech investments.”
In addition to the new facility, Meta is making a more than $200 million investment in local infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to transportation, utilities, and other essential services. This large-scale commitment will benefit both the local economy and the broader state, ensuring that the surrounding communities can fully support and benefit from the data center’s operations.
Looking Ahead
The Louisiana AI data center is set to become a critical hub for Meta’s technological innovation and long-term growth. Its strategic location, focus on renewable energy, and economic impact on the region underscore the company’s commitment to both advancing technology and contributing positively to the communities in which it operates. As the project progresses, the facility will not only support Meta’s current and future technological endeavors but also serve as a cornerstone of Louisiana’s expanding role in the global tech landscape.
This announcement further solidifies Meta’s position as a leader in AI and cloud infrastructure development, paving the way for future advancements that will drive innovation across industries. With a focus on sustainability, community involvement, and economic development, Meta’s Louisiana investment is poised to shape the future of both the tech industry and the region’s economic landscape.
