In what’s become the most disgusting tradition in college football, Maryland head coach Mike Locksley was rewarded by having a bucket of mayonnaise poured on him.
Maryland defeated NC State, 16-12, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and per tradition, the typical Gatorade bath given to winning head coaches was swapped out for an unhealthy amount of mayonnaise. If that’s what happens to the winner, we’re worried about what’s in store for the loser.
Locksley wisely wore one of the big hats made famous by Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. back on Nov. 27. As head coach, Locksley knows to prepare for all kinds of scenarios. He planned accordingly with his big hat.
Maryland (8-5) was led by a strong defensive effort. No. 23 NC State (8-5) finished the game with less than 100 yards and only 27 yards rushing on 18 attempts.
As rough as NC State had it on offense, nothing was nauseating as watching all the ways fans ate mayo during the game, including a food-eating contest, someone eating it by the jar in the stands and ESPN’s Anish Schroff dipping a macaroon into mayonnaise.
It’s a disappointing end to the season for the Wolfpack, but at least head coach Dave Doeren wasn’t honored by being doused in mayonnaise.
