The astronomical losses suffered due to the ongoing migration from third world countries was further acerbated by the loss of 43 migrants trying to cross the sea to Europe.
A young baby was said to be among 43 people killed when a boat carrying more than 100 migrants broke apart in rough seas off Italy’s southern coast.
The shipwreck took place near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Calabria, the region that forms the tip of Italy’s boot. Rescue workers using jet skis are still searching for survivors in the choppy waters, with 80 so far being accounted for.
Danilo Maida, spokesman for the firefighters in the region, said the death toll from the tragedy ‘has surpassed 30’.
The Italian news agency AGI said a baby aged just a few months old and several children were among the dead. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said: ‘It is a huge tragedy which shows the absolute need to act firmly against irregular migration channels.’
This is in sharp contrast to opinions aired by several human rights bodies who have been calling for a more lenient and human centred approach to the immigration imbroglio which stress the length of the European Union and the United Kingdom.
This group argues that a more human centred approach would stem the tide of human lives constantly getting lost through illegal crossing and the unwelcoming climate of the European shores.
