Human Rights

The Malawi Law Society (MLS) and the Malawi Network for Older Persons (Manepo) has joined forces to condemn several forms of abuse that elderly people face in the country.

Following the joint statement released on January 3, 2023, the two organisations have called for respect of human dignity, personal freedoms and the right to life for elderly people in the country.

In addition to that, the two have also called for quick investigations and prosecution in a case of a 72-year old woman, Maggie Nyengani who was killed on January 1, 2023 over witchcraft accusations in Phalombe district.

The joint statement has been signed by MLS honorary secretary Chrispin Ngunde and Manepo Executive Director Andrew Kavala.

Of late the country has been registering high cases in violence against order people most of them accused of practicing witchcraft.

However, the country’s laws do not recognize witchcraft.
