Lockheed Martin to fly its top-secret hypersonic jet in 2025 and to break the sound barrier at 4000 MPH.
Lockheed Martin’s SR-72, nicknamed “Son of Blackbird,” is anticipated to take its first flight in 2025.
This unmanned hypersonic plane, possibly a secret project for the U.S. Air Force, aims to be the fastest ever, surpassing 4,000 mph (6,437 kph). Serving intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, the SR-72, succeeding the SR-71 “Blackbird,” is designed to be reusable and support Lockheed Martin’s High-Speed Strike Weapon (HSSW).
With the capability to launch hypersonic weapons at extraordinary speeds and maintain them for extended periods, the SR-72 is closely watched by the military, although its official ties to the Pentagon remain unconfirmed.
