Kliff Kingsbury is meeting with the Houston Texans this week regarding a potential job on the coaching staff of new head coach DeMeco Ryans.
That report comes from ESPN’s Dan Graziano, and it is presumed that Kingsbury is meeting with the Texans to become the team’s new offensive coordinator.
Kingsbury was fired by the Arizona Cardinals as their head coach following the 2022 season, ending a highly disappointing four-year run that saw the team go 28-37-1. That includes a 4-13 record this season that sent the Cardinals to the bottom of the NFC West.
Just because Kingsbury’s experience as an NFL head coach was a flop does not mean he can’t be a successful assistant and offensive play-caller. The NFL is full of people that excelled in the latter role only to fail when given the task of leading an entire football operation.
The Cardinals did have moments of success with Kingsbury calling plays, finishing in the top 10 in points scored during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. But they finished outside of the top 20 in 2019 and 2022.
Whoever the Texans hire as their next offensive coordinator is going to have a big responsibility in helping get the franchise back on track.
Houston has two of the top-12 picks in the 2023 draft class, including the No. 2 overall pick that will almost certainly be used on a quarterback. Alabama’s Bryce Young seems to be the consensus for that spot unless somebody moves ahead of them in a trade with Chicago to select Young.
The Texans have been the NFL’s worst team the past three years, winning just 11 games total and finishing 30th in points scored in each of the past two years.
They are desperate for new ideas and new voices. Ryans seems like a great fit as head coach and in helping to turn around the defense. But the offense is where things really need a lift. Consistency at quarterback will help a lot, but they also need the right person to help develop that new starter.
