Irish PM and Deputy PM Hail Hostage Release as “Ray of Hope” and Call for Lasting Peace

World

Dublin, 13 October 2025 — Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris have issued a statement on the release of hostages by Hamas under the terms of the recently brokered ceasefire, praising international mediation efforts and reaffirming Ireland’s commitment to supporting peace in the Middle East.

Taoiseach’s Statement

Micheál Martin said he was “deeply moved” by the sight of hostages being reunited with their families after more than two years in captivity. He paid tribute to the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and other partners for their role in securing the release.

The Taoiseach also highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, noting the scale of devastation faced by civilians returning to their homes. He called for an immediate surge in aid and essential services as winter approaches.

Martin described the ceasefire as “the first step on a road to peace”, stressing that all parties must adhere to the agreement in the coming weeks. He reiterated Ireland’s support for a two‑state solution, saying: “Now is the time to seize the momentum and begin the task of building a just and lasting peace in the region.”

Tánaiste’s Statement

Tánaiste Simon Harris echoed the Taoiseach’s sentiments, calling the release “a major step forward for peace” and a day many families feared would never come.

He acknowledged that “no peace plan is perfect”, but drew on Ireland’s own history to argue that even the most complex conflicts can end if all sides commit to political solutions.

Harris confirmed that Ireland is already contributing humanitarian aid to Gaza and has directed officials to prepare for expanded assistance in coordination with international partners. He concluded: “Today, after more than two years of horror, pain and unimaginable loss of life, there is a ray of hope.”

Outlook

The statements from Ireland’s leaders underline both the fragility and potential of the current ceasefire. While the release of hostages has been widely welcomed, the challenge now lies in ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need and that the ceasefire evolves into a durable peace process.

Ireland has positioned itself as a willing partner in this effort, offering both humanitarian support and the lessons of its own peace process as guidance for a region still searching for stability.
