Dublin, 4 October 2025 — Ireland’s top political leaders have welcomed Hamas’s announcement that it will release all remaining Israeli hostages — both living and deceased — under the terms of the proposed U.S.-brokered Middle East peace plan. The statements from Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris reflect Ireland’s growing diplomatic engagement in efforts to end the war in Gaza.

Taoiseach: “A Very Welcome Development”

Taoiseach Martin described the announcement as “very welcome news to the families who have waited almost two years for their return.” He expressed hope that the move would pave the way for an immediate ceasefire and a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Martin urged all parties to seize the moment to create the conditions for lasting peace.

Tánaiste: “Stop the Bombing, Silence the Guns”

Tánaiste Harris echoed the Taoiseach’s sentiments, calling the hostage release pledge “welcome and urgent.” He emphasised the need to “stop the bombing, silence the guns, end the famine,” and allow aid to flow freely. Harris reiterated Ireland’s steadfast support for a Two-State Solution, and affirmed the country’s readiness to assist in practical efforts to end human suffering and facilitate peace.

Ireland’s Diplomatic Position

Ireland has consistently advocated for international law, humanitarian access, and a negotiated settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The government’s response to Hamas’s statement aligns with its broader policy of supporting multilateral diplomacy and civilian protection.

As global attention turns to the next phase of negotiations, Ireland’s leaders have positioned the country as a constructive voice for peace, urging restraint and humanitarian action amid one of the most volatile chapters in the region’s recent history.
