The Department of Transport has been awarded €24.33 billion under the National Development Plan (NDP) Review 2025, marking a major investment in Ireland’s transport infrastructure over the next five years. The funding was welcomed by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, Minister of State Seán Canney, and Minister of State Jerry Buttimer, who emphasized its transformative potential for national connectivity, sustainability, and economic growth.
The allocation will support key initiatives including:
- Public transport expansion, notably the commencement of MetroLink construction and continued rollout of DART+ and BusConnects
- Road network upgrades and safety improvements
- Active travel and greenway development to promote low-carbon mobility
- Electrification of road transport, with grants and infrastructure for electric vehicles
Minister O’Brien described the investment as a reflection of the government’s commitment to building a modern, safe, and sustainable transport network, highlighting its role in reducing emissions and enhancing regional mobility.
Minister Canney reaffirmed support for the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, noting its potential to reshape long-term connectivity across Ireland. Minister Buttimer emphasized the importance of local road investment for rural communities, small businesses, and everyday travel.
The funding builds on previous NDP-supported projects such as Connecting Ireland, the DART fleet upgrade, and nationwide EV infrastructure. It forms part of a broader €275.4 billion capital investment plan announced in the NDP Review, aimed at securing Ireland’s future through strategic infrastructure development.
