Ireland: Taoiseach (PM) Micheál Martin Hails Constructive Talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has described his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers as “warm and constructive,” highlighting progress on key bilateral and international issues.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Martin confirmed that both leaders reviewed the strong relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom, and discussed preparations for the upcoming UK-Ireland Summit, set to take place in Ireland this spring. He noted that the two governments are advancing an extensive programme of cooperation.

Significant progress was reported on legacy matters in Northern Ireland. Martin stated that both sides are close to finalising a framework to address these issues, with a shared recognition of their importance to victims, survivors, and communities across both islands.

The leaders also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, jointly calling for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a substantial increase in humanitarian aid. On Ukraine, they reaffirmed their commitment to the Coalition of the Willing, pledging continued support for Ukraine and coordinated efforts to pressure Russia to end its aggression.

The statement reflects a shared commitment to strengthening UK-Ireland relations and addressing pressing global challenges through diplomatic cooperation.
