18 September 2025 — Ireland has officially exceeded €1 billion in funding secured from Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation programme. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless confirmed the milestone, noting that Irish organisations have received €1.02 billion to date—2.09% of the €49 billion awarded so far—placing the country ahead of its national target.
The funding supports Irish universities, research bodies, and companies in delivering high-impact projects and fostering cross-border collaboration. Notable initiatives include the development of bio-based artificial lungs and efforts to reduce underwater noise pollution affecting marine ecosystems.
Ireland’s success is underpinned by the Horizon Europe National Support Network, coordinated by Enterprise Ireland, which provides expert guidance to applicants. Enterprise Ireland CEO Jenny Melia praised the achievement as a testament to Ireland’s global competitiveness and innovation capacity.
With a national goal of €1.5 billion by 2027, Ireland remains on track to exceed its Horizon Europe ambitions under the Impact 2030 strategy.
