Minister of State at the Department of Justice with special responsibility for International Law, Law Reform and Youth Justice Niall Collins visited The Alternative Project, a youth intervention project in Athy on the morning of 25th of June, 2025, highlighting the government’s continued focus on youth rehabilitation and community-based crime prevention.

During the visit, Minister Collins met with Labour Party Councilor Mark Leigh, representing the Athy Municipal District, and Aoife Breslin, Councilor at Kildare County Council. The discussions centered on the critical role of early intervention and support for at-risk youth.

The Alternative Project, widely regarded as a model for diversion and rehabilitation, works directly with young people involved in or at risk of entering the criminal justice system. Through tailored support, skills training, and structured positive activities, the initiative helps participants move away from criminal behavior and toward brighter, more productive futures.

“As elected representatives, we’re always proud to support initiatives like this—programs that give young people a real second chance,” said Councilor Leigh. “This project doesn’t just reduce crime; it transforms lives.”

Minister Collins praised the work being done on the ground, noting the importance of replicating successful community-led approaches to justice reform across the country.

The visit underscores growing national momentum behind preventative justice strategies that aim not only to reduce reoffending but also to invest in long-term social impact.
