The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has announced the launch of the Digital Transformation Scheme, a major initiative aimed at modernising Ireland’s media sector. Welcomed by Minister Patrick O’Donovan T.D., the scheme is being rolled out by Coimisiún na Meán in line with recommendations from the Future of Media Commission and following extensive consultation with industry stakeholders.

Backed by €3 million in Exchequer funding for 2025, the scheme will operate as a contestable, platform-neutral award programme. Its core objectives are to incentivise investment in digital infrastructure and services by public service content providers, support the development of sustainable business models, and provide targeted training and upskilling for media professionals.

“The Digital Transformation Scheme will provide essential support for the media sector in adapting to a rapidly changing media landscape,” said Minister O’Donovan. “Modernisation and digital tools are vital for promoting a plurality of voices and ensuring the continued delivery of trustworthy, objective public service content.”

Applications open today, 26 September, and will close on 24 October 2025

The scheme marks a strategic investment in the future of Irish media, reinforcing its role in informing the public, safeguarding information integrity, and preserving democratic trust.
