Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, met yesterday in Dublin with UK Minister of State for Europe, North Americas and Overseas Territories, Stephen Doughty MP, to advance bilateral cooperation under the UK–Ireland Joint Statement 2030 framework.
The meeting reflected a continued strengthening of relations between Ireland and the UK, as well as improving EU–UK ties.
“Our trading relationship is worth €2.5 billion per week – a clear indicator of the depth and importance of our economic links,” said Minister Byrne. “Minister Doughty and I reviewed progress across key areas of collaboration set out in the Joint Statement 2030, including trade, security, and foreign policy.”
The two ministers also welcomed the outcomes of the recent EU–UK Summit in May, which established a renewed strategic partnership and cooperation agenda.
Discussions also covered shared foreign policy concerns, particularly the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the ongoing war in Ukraine. “This was a valuable opportunity to exchange views on global challenges and reaffirm our commitment to working together in support of international stability,” Minister Byrne added.
