The Irish Government has approved an additional €696 million in capital funding for 2025 to support a wide range of housing programmes, Minister for Housing James Browne announced on July 29. The funding aims to intensify efforts to address the national housing crisis through new construction, refurbishment, and targeted support schemes.
🏘️ Key Housing Targets
- Delivery of 4,600 new social and affordable homes, including 3,700 new builds
- Expansion of the housing pipeline for 2026–2028
- Refurbishment of vacant properties under the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant Scheme
- Continued support for homeowners under the Enhanced Defective Concrete Block Remediation Scheme
- Acquisition of second-hand homes by local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies to prevent homelessness
- Development contribution waivers to incentivize private sector housing supply
This latest allocation brings the Department’s total additional capital funding for 2025 to over €1.4 billion, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to scaling up housing delivery.
🗣️ Ministerial Statement
Minister Browne emphasized the need for a multi-pronged strategy:
“This funding empowers local authorities and housing bodies to accelerate delivery, expand access, and tackle homelessness. It reflects our determination to confront the housing crisis head-on.”
He added that the funding is designed to support long-term structural improvements in Ireland’s housing system, rather than relying on short-term fixes.
📅 Next Steps
A detailed breakdown of the funding allocations across programmes and regions is expected to be published next week by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
