While maintaining international prominence, influence and visibility through activities in the African Corporate Governance Network (ACGN), the Institute of Directors (IoD) Nigeria said it is also working hard to push for sound governance across Africa.

President and Chairman of Governing Council, IoD Nigeria, Dr. Ije Jidenma, revealed this at this year’s directors’ dinner and awards, in Lagos, where she highlighted some of the achievements the institute made during the period.

She said the quest for professionalisation of directorship has continued, assuring that the institute will leave no stone unturned to see that it accomplishes it before the end of the first quarter of 2023.

She said the institute’s quest to deepen good governance in the public sector received greater boost with the admission into membership, key public sector functionaries including federal ministers, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, several permanent secretaries and directors of key government agencies and regulatory authorities, like the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), among others.

“We have expanded our strategic engagements with the Ivory Tower. We have successfully signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with the University of Lagos and the Lagos Business School, which we believe will accelerate a gown and town engagement for the development of sound governance and good business ethics,” she said.

The Guest Speaker and Country Director, Development Alternatives Inc (DAI), Dr. Joe Abah, who spoke on ‘Building Stronger Institutions: The Role of Corporate Governance’, said setting the tone at the top, promoting good relationships with stakeholders, shaping organisational culture, promoting ethics and values, as well as allocating capital and managing risk are some of the roles of corporate governance in building stronger institutions.
