Interpol Elects Lucas Philippe of France as President for Four-Year Term

World

French police official Lucas Philippe has been elected president of Interpol at its 93rd General Assembly held in Marrakech, Morocco, to serve a four-year term. Philippe, 53, currently counsellor for European and international affairs to the director of the French National Police, succeeds Ahmed Nasser al-Raisi of the UAE. The assembly united 886 delegates from 179 member countries along with representatives from 34 international organisations.

During his campaign, Philippe emphasized his goal to consolidate Interpol’s role as a global reference for collective security amid growing transnational crime challenges. While the Interpol presidency is largely symbolic, responsible primarily for presiding over the General Assembly and Executive Committee meetings, the agency’s daily operations are managed by Secretary-General Valdecy Urquiza of Brazil, elected in 2024. Philippe’s election signals Interpol’s ongoing commitment to strengthen global cooperation against organised crime, cybercrime, fraud, and data protection threats across its 196 member nations.

This leadership change follows a period marked by scrutiny of previous presidents and aims to unify the agency’s governance structures to better address complex international security challenges. The Executive Committee, which Philippe chairs, provides strategic guidance and oversees the implementation of Interpol’s priorities globally.
