Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen raided multiple United Nations offices in the capital city of Sanaa on Sunday, detaining at least 11 UN personnel, according to statements from UN officials.

The raids targeted agencies including the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO). UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the detentions and the forced entry into UN premises, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all staff.

The incident follows an Israeli airstrike on August 28 that killed several senior members of the Houthi-run government, including Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi. In response, the Houthis have tightened security across Sanaa and reportedly increased arrests of individuals suspected of foreign affiliations.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg noted that the latest detentions add to a growing list of UN personnel held by the Houthis, some since 2021. Humanitarian operations in rebel-controlled areas have been repeatedly disrupted by such actions, further complicating aid delivery in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
