A midair collision between two helicopters over Hammonton, New Jersey, on Sunday left one pilot dead and another critically injured, according to local officials. The crash happened late in the morning near Hammonton Municipal Airport, a small airfield in Atlantic County.
Authorities say the aircraft involved—an Enstrom F‑28A and an Enstrom 280C—were flying in the same area when they struck each other before falling to the ground. One helicopter burst into flames on impact, sending a column of smoke into the air as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Only the pilots were on board each aircraft. One was pronounced dead at the crash site, while the other was airlifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud crack before seeing one of the helicopters spiraling downward. Video captured by a resident showed the aircraft rotating uncontrollably as it descended.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened an investigation to determine what caused the rare midair collision. Officials have not yet released the identities of the pilots.
The crash has shaken the Hammonton community, where investigators are expected to remain for several days as they examine debris, review flight paths, and analyze communication records.
