An estimated thousands of tourists remain stranded across Hawaii following the cancellation of 35 flights at major airports including Kahului, Kona, Hilo, and Lihue. The disruptions were triggered by a tsunami alert issued after a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
Earthquake Sparks Safety Response
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a regional alert earlier today, prompting airlines and airport authorities to suspend operations as a precautionary measure. Although the tsunami did not result in major flooding or damage, the alert led to widespread cancellations and delays across Hawaii’s air transport network.
Airport Disruptions and Flight Impact
The affected airports include:
- Kahului (OGG): United Airlines canceled 4 flights (25%) and delayed 1; Hawaiian Airlines canceled 4 flights (14%) and delayed 4.
- Kona (KOA): Delta Air Lines canceled 3 flights (13%) and delayed 1; Alaska Airlines canceled 2 flights (25%) and delayed 1.
- Hilo (ITO) and Lihue (LIH): Alaska Airlines canceled 1 flight (12%) and delayed 1 at Lihue.
Operations at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu also experienced secondary delays due to network congestion.
Airlines Affected
United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Alaska Airlines were among the most affected carriers. International airlines such as Jetstar and WestJet also grounded flights to and from Hawaii. Many airlines issued travel waivers to assist stranded passengers.
Rebooking Challenges and Airport Conditions
Tourists reported long queues, overcrowded terminals, and difficulties securing alternative flights and accommodations due to high demand and limited availability. Local hotels were quickly booked, adding to the travel complications.
Status Update and Advisory
The tsunami alert has since been lifted, and flight operations are gradually resuming. Authorities continue to monitor seismic conditions, though no immediate further threats have been identified. Passengers are advised to:
- Regularly check airline websites or apps for updated flight status
- Contact customer service for rebooking options
- Consider flexible travel arrangements due to ongoing delays
