A 59-year-old Greek citizen, born in Georgia, has been charged with espionage and remanded in custody pending trial after allegedly photographing and filming military operations at the strategic port of Alexandroupolis in northeastern Greece. This port serves as a crucial logistics hub for NATO and U.S. operations supporting Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
The suspect was arrested on April 29 during a joint operation by Greek police and the National Intelligence Service. Authorities claim he was acting on behalf of another individual and transmitted the recordings via an encrypted messaging app. He is under investigation for potential ties to Russian security services through a contact in Lithuania.
Appearing before a magistrate in Alexandroupolis, the suspect denied all charges. A trial date has not yet been set.
This arrest highlights ongoing concerns over espionage activities targeting critical NATO infrastructure in Greece.
