Visakhapatnam, India – July 31, 2025
Google has announced plans to invest $6 billion in building a 1-gigawatt hyperscale data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project includes a $2 billion allocation for renewable energy infrastructure to sustainably power the facility, marking Google’s largest data centre investment in Asia to date.
Strategic Expansion and Sustainability
The initiative is part of Google’s broader $75 billion expansion of cloud and AI infrastructure across Asia, with similar deployments underway in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. The Visakhapatnam facility will be powered primarily by solar and wind energy, aligning with Google’s goal of achieving 24/7 carbon-free operations by 2030.
Regional Impact and Infrastructure Development
Andhra Pradesh’s government has positioned Visakhapatnam as a future digital hub, with plans to build three international cable landing stations to enhance global connectivity. The state aims to develop 6 GW of data centre capacity over the next five years, starting from a near-zero base.
State IT Minister Nara Lokesh stated that 1.6 GW of data centre investments have already been secured, with the initial facilities expected to be operational within 24 months. The data centre boom is projected to generate thousands of jobs across construction, operations, and IT support sectors.
Energy Demands and Grid Planning
To meet the electricity-intensive demands of hyperscale data centres, Andhra Pradesh anticipates up to 10 GW of power requirements over the next five years. While most of this will be sourced from green energy, coal-based backup capacity may be included to ensure reliability.
