Google Signs Geothermal Power Contract in Taiwan, Marking First 24/7 Clean Energy Deal in Asia

CSR/ECO/ESG

Google has signed its first corporate geothermal power purchase agreement (CPPA) in Asia, partnering with Baseload Capital to add 10 megawatts (MW) of carbon-free energy to Taiwan’s grid by 2029. This agreement marks a significant milestone as the first corporate geothermal deal in Taiwan and aims to double the country’s current commercial geothermal capacity. The energy supplied will power Google’s regional operations, including its data center, offices, and its largest hardware research and development hub outside the U.S.

The partnership also includes an equity investment by Google in Baseload Capital, supporting the company’s efforts to scale geothermal energy. This move aligns with Google’s climate goals of cutting the company’s planet-heating emissions in half and matching its electricity use with carbon-free energy purchases around the clock by 2030.

Beyond Taiwan, Google is considering pursuing similar geothermal deals in Japan and Indonesia. Additionally, the company is supporting geothermal research with the University of Newcastle in Australia. This initiative highlights Google’s commitment to sustainable energy and could inspire more corporate adoption of geothermal power.
