The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) has issued a strong call for action against the killings of journalists worldwide, revealing that 55 media professionals have been murdered since January 1, 2025. The statement, released on World Press Freedom Day (May 3), underscores the urgent need to protect journalists from censorship, harassment, and violence.
Rising Toll of Journalist Killings
In the Gaza Strip, at least 18 media workers have been killed since the start of the year, adding to the devastating toll of over 200 journalists killed by the Israeli army since October 7, 2023. PEC President Blaise Lempen condemned the targeting of journalists, stating that silencing witnesses will not stop the profession from doing its job. He urged global accountability for war crimes and an end to impunity for journalist murders.
South Asia: A Growing Crisis
PEC’s South and Southeast Asia representative Nava Thakuria highlighted the April 11 murder of Sindhi journalist Allah Dino Shar, who was associated with Hum News in Pakistan’s Khairpur locality. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has demanded strong action against the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, India has lost three journalists—Mukesh Chandrakar, Raghavendra Vajpayee, and Sahadev Dey—to targeted killings since January 1, 2025. Nepal has also reported the murder of journalist Suresh Rajak, further raising concerns over press freedom in the region.
Urgent Calls for Accountability
PEC has urged governments and international bodies to take immediate action to end impunity for journalist killings. The organization emphasized that press freedom is essential for transparency, accountability, and an informed citizenry.
