Ghana President Orders Investigation Into $400M Cathedral Project Amid Economic Strain

World

Ghana’s newly elected President, John Mahama, has called for an investigation into the controversial $400 million national cathedral project, which has become a point of contention as the country faces its most severe economic crisis in decades. The project, initiated by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, has sparked widespread criticism, particularly regarding its funding and relevance amid urgent national challenges.

Financial Concerns and Public Spending:

While the cathedral was originally presented as a privately funded initiative, $58 million of public funds have already been allocated, with little visible progress aside from a large excavation on a prime piece of land in central Accra. The site, which was once home to state buildings and judicial residences, remains undeveloped. The stalled construction has drawn further criticism, especially as contractors have halted work over unpaid fees and five members of the project’s board of trustees have resigned.

Economic Context:

The project’s financial strain comes at a time when Ghana is struggling with high inflation, currently at 23.8%, and ongoing economic challenges. The country secured a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last year to address its economic issues, making the continued expenditure on the cathedral increasingly controversial. Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has suggested that the government might discontinue its funding for the project, citing the need to reduce “wasteful expenditure.”

Public Debate and Political Response:

The cathedral, envisioned as a Christian worship and cultural center, has faced opposition from critics who argue that the country’s resources would be better spent on pressing issues such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Mahama, who had indicated during his campaign that he would review the project, has now reiterated the need for a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that public funds are used responsibly and effectively.

This investigation reflects a broader debate in Ghana over the prioritization of government spending amid an economic crisis, with many questioning the cathedral project’s alignment with the country’s immediate needs.
