German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has cautioned that Russia’s war in Ukraine could continue for an extended period, stating that peace must not come at the cost of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

In a televised interview on August 31, Merz said he is “mentally preparing” for a long conflict, emphasizing that “we’re trying to end it as quickly as possible, but certainly not at the price of Ukraine’s capitulation”. He warned that conceding to Russia could embolden future aggression, adding, “The day after tomorrow it will be us.”

Merz also expressed skepticism about recent diplomatic efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that diplomacy requires sustained engagement and cannot deliver instant results. He reiterated Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense and called for robust security guarantees in any future peace agreement.

The Chancellor’s remarks come amid ongoing hostilities and stalled negotiations, with Russia continuing its military campaign and rejecting calls for an unconditional ceasefire.
