Friedrich Merz: Germany’s Next Chancellor

World

Germany is set for a political shift as Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is expected to be formally elected as Chancellor by lawmakers on May 6. His rise follows the CDU’s victory in the February 2025 elections, securing a coalition agreement with the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Merz has pledged economic reforms, increased defense spending, and modernization efforts, aiming to steer Germany through a period of economic stagnation and geopolitical uncertainty. His coalition agreement, titled “Responsibility for Germany,” outlines key policy shifts, including tax reforms, migration policy adjustments, and a new voluntary military service model.

Despite his electoral success, Merz faces low public approval ratings, with polls indicating skepticism about his leadership and trustworthiness. His recent policy reversals, including a controversial debt reform deal with the SPD and Greens, have fueled criticism.

Outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz will officially step down before Merz is sworn in by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The new government’s ability to implement its ambitious agenda will be closely watched, particularly as Germany navigates challenges in European security, trade, and domestic economic recovery.
