On Saturday, January 25, 2025, Hamas released four Israeli female hostages in a carefully staged handover, marking the second hostage swap since a ceasefire took effect on January 19, 2025. The four women—Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag—had been captured by Hamas during the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, when 251 individuals were taken hostage. Their release followed intense negotiations and was part of a broader ceasefire agreement aimed at halting the ongoing violence that began in October 2023.

The event, held in Palestine Square, Gaza City, was carefully choreographed by Hamas, contrasting with the chaotic scenes of the previous exchange. Hostages were brought to the stage by masked gunmen, where they were met by a Red Cross official who signed documents with a Hamas representative. Each of the hostages wore a lanyard with identification, and the scene was deliberately crafted to project both order and strength. The hostages were seen smiling and waving as they were reunited with their freedom, while Hamas militants and Palestinian civilians observed the moment.

In exchange for the four hostages, Israel released 200 Palestinian prisoners. Among them were individuals who will be deported to neighboring countries, including Egypt, due to the severity of their offenses. Others were transferred to Gaza or allowed to return to their homes in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. This exchange followed the initial swap on January 20, 2025, when three hostages and 90 Palestinian prisoners were released.

However, the exchange was not without controversy. Israel had expected the release of Arbel Yehud, a civilian woman, as part of the ceasefire deal, which prioritizes the release of female captives. Yet, her name was absent from the list of hostages provided by Hamas, prompting Israel to announce that it would not allow displaced Palestinians to return to northern Gaza as previously planned. This decision reflected growing tensions over the terms of the ceasefire. Later, a Palestinian official confirmed that Yehud would be included in the next scheduled release, expected to take place on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

The swap marks another milestone in the delicate negotiations between Israel and Hamas. While the exchanges have provided some relief to the hostages’ families, the broader ceasefire remains fragile. The international community continues to watch closely as both sides navigate the complexities of the situation, with the hope that further progress can be made toward a longer-term peace agreement. However, the future remains uncertain, as each move in the negotiations carries the weight of unresolved issues and longstanding geopolitical tensions.
