📍 London, July 13, 2025 — Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical care at a clinic in London, according to a statement released by his longtime media aide Garba Shehu. The announcement was made public on Sunday afternoon. No further details regarding the cause of death have been disclosed.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, following an earlier tenure as military head of state from 1983 to 1985. His 2015 election marked a historic moment in Nigerian politics, as he became the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president, unseating Goodluck Jonathan under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A retired Major General in the Nigerian Army, Buhari was widely recognized for his anti-corruption agenda, emphasis on public sector reform, and efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s economy and infrastructure. His political career spanned several decades, during which he contested presidential elections in 2003, 2007, and 2011 before securing victory in 2015 and winning re-election in 2019.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced by the family. Buhari’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s modern political history.
