Fort Stewart, Georgia — 6 August 2025 — Five U.S. Army soldiers were shot on Wednesday morning during an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River. The suspected shooter, a fellow service member, was apprehended at 11:35 a.m., approximately 30 minutes after the base was placed under lockdown.
🔒 Incident Overview
The shooting occurred in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (2ABCT) area of the base. Emergency personnel responded swiftly, and all five injured soldiers were transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.
Fort Stewart officials confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community. The main cantonment area of the base was reopened by 12:10 p.m., although the 2ABCT complex remains under lockdown pending further investigation.
🛡️ Response and Investigation
The FBI is assisting the Army Criminal Investigation Division in the ongoing inquiry. Local law enforcement, including the Hinesville Police Department, supported the response and confirmed the scene is secure.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed condolences and pledged continued support:
“Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Fort Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”
🏫 Community Impact
Three elementary schools on the base, serving nearly 1,400 students, were placed on lockdown as a precaution. Nearby schools in Liberty County also enacted safety measures out of an abundance of caution.
Fort Stewart, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is home to thousands of soldiers and families assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division.
