🇮🇹 Milan, Italy — July 8, 2025
A horrifying accident at Milan Bergamo Airport has resulted in the death of a man and the suspension of all flight operations this morning. Italian authorities report that the victim was sucked into the engine of a taxiing aircraft, identified as a Volotea Airbus A319 bound for Asturias, Spain.
The individual, believed to have breached security and accessed the tarmac, was neither a registered passenger nor airport staff. The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. local time, immediately triggering an emergency lockdown of the airport’s taxiway and apron area.
✈️ Impact on Flights
- Eight departures were cancelled
- Nine arriving flights were diverted — including reroutes to Bologna, Verona, and Milan Malpensa
The airport’s operator SACBO confirmed via social media that the causes of the incident are under investigation, and the site remains cordoned off. The Lombardy Airports Association warned of potential delays and operational disruptions throughout the day.
🚨 Security and Safety Concerns
The tragedy has raised urgent questions about airport perimeter security and surveillance protocols. While Milan Bergamo resumed limited operations shortly after midday, full service is pending the outcome of law enforcement and aviation safety investigations.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, and counseling services are reportedly being offered to witnesses and airport staff.
