In a discussion hosted at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Dr. Chris Murray, Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), and Stephanie Psaki, Senior Adviser at CSIS’s Global Health Policy Center, reviewed key findings from IHME’s Financing Global Health 2025 report and its companion publication in The Lancet.

The report highlights a significant 22% decline in development assistance for health between 2024 and 2025, raising concerns about the resilience of global health financing systems. The conversation centered on whether these reductions represent a temporary setback or a more enduring challenge for global health equity and infrastructure.

Dr. Murray and Psaki also explored broader issues shaping the future of global health, including:

  • The role of artificial intelligence in expanding healthcare access
  • The importance of producing global public goods
  • The persistent gap between academic research and policy implementation

The dialogue underscored the uncertainty surrounding future funding and emphasized the need for strategic innovation and cross-sector collaboration to safeguard progress in global health.
