European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during a visit to the Polish-Belarusian border on August 31, 2025, pledged expanded European Union support for member states bordering Russia and Ukraine. Speaking alongside Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk near Krynki, von der Leyen emphasized that Europe’s external borders are a shared responsibility.
She announced proposals to triple funding for migration and border management in the EU’s next seven-year budget (2028–2034), alongside a tenfold increase in military mobility funding and a fivefold boost in overall defense investment. The initiative aims to strengthen the EU’s eastern frontier amid ongoing hybrid threats and geopolitical instability.
Von der Leyen’s visit is part of a broader tour of frontline EU states, including Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Romania. The Commission is expected to present a roadmap for additional defense funding at the upcoming European Council meeting in October.
