The European Commission is providing new emergency aid to support communities devastated by Cyclone Chido across Mayotte and Mozambique.
Responding to France’s request for assistance, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Sweden have offered shelter and other items via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The EU also stands ready to mobilise additional support via its rescEU stockpiles. The EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service has also produced maps for Mayotte and Mozambique to support relief efforts.
For Mozambique, €900,000 in emergency humanitarian funding has been allocated to aid affected communities, focusing on shelter, water, healthcare, and protection. Additionally, 5 Humanitarian Air Bridge flights will deliver 60 tonnes of emergency aid, including shelter materials, from EU stocks in Nairobi to Pemba, Cabo Delgado. Furthermore, through existing EU-funded projects, partners are already deploying immediate relief assistance.
Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, said: “We will do all we can to support Mayotte, and I thank our Member States for their swift support via our Civil Protection Mechanism. It is crucial we get aid to the many left homeless by cyclone Chido. We are also providing emergency aid to Mozambique, which has also been hit particularly hard.”
