BRUSSELS — The European Commission is extending its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) strategy beyond continental borders through a new partnership with African nations, aiming to accelerate the global transition to low-emission air travel.

The initiative seeks to support the development, production, and deployment of SAF across Africa by fostering investment, technology transfer, and regulatory cooperation. It builds on the EU’s broader climate and energy goals, including its Fit for 55 package and the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which mandates increased SAF use within European airspace.

Commission officials emphasized that Africa’s vast biomass potential and emerging biofuel markets present a strategic opportunity to scale SAF production sustainably. The partnership will also focus on capacity building, infrastructure development, and ensuring environmental safeguards.

By promoting SAF in Africa, the EU aims to strengthen global supply chains, reduce aviation’s carbon footprint, and support inclusive economic growth in partner countries.
