🇪🇺 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a series of proposed actions aimed at curbing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, describing the humanitarian situation as “catastrophic” during her annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament.
Von der Leyen outlined a “package of measures” that includes suspending bilateral support to Israel, imposing sanctions on extremist Israeli ministers and settlers, and partially suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which governs trade and political relations.
“Man-made famine can never be a weapon of war,” she stated, urging EU member states to take individual responsibility if consensus cannot be reached. She emphasized that Europe must lead efforts to secure real security for Israelis and a viable future for Palestinians.
🕊️ The announcement comes amid growing international criticism of Israel’s military operations, which have resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian casualties since the October 2023 Hamas-led attacks. Israel has condemned the EU’s stance, accusing it of echoing Hamas propaganda and undermining bilateral relations.
Despite internal divisions among EU member states, von der Leyen stressed the need for coordinated diplomatic pressure and humanitarian accountability. The proposed measures signal a shift in EU policy, reflecting mounting concern over the conflict’s regional and global implications.
