Eastern Airways Grounds Fleet and Faces Insolvency After 28 Years of Service

Travel

Eastern Airways has suspended all flights and filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator, marking a potential end to the UK regional airline’s 28-year operation amid mounting financial pressure.

Sudden Halt to Operations

On 27 October 2025, UK regional carrier Eastern Airways announced the immediate suspension of all flights, citing severe financial strain. The airline filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator, a legal step that provides temporary protection from creditors while seeking a buyer or restructuring solution.

The move has left passengers stranded and approximately 250 employees facing job uncertainty. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has advised travelers not to go to airports and to seek alternative arrangements.

Industry Impact

Founded in 1997 and headquartered at Humberside Airport, Eastern Airways operated a small network of domestic routes, including services between Aberdeen, Newquay, Gatwick, and other regional hubs. The airline played a key role in supporting the UK’s oil and gas sector, particularly through its operations in Scotland.

In 2024, the airline carried 1.3 million passengers and reported £60 million in revenue, but struggled with £19.7 million in net losses and £26 million in debt, according to financial disclosures.

Broader Aviation Context

Eastern Airways’ collapse follows a string of UK regional airline failures over the past decade, including Flybe, Monarch, and Thomas Cook, underscoring the fragility of the domestic aviation sector. Analysts point to operational strategy, business model, rising operating costs, volatile fuel prices, and post-pandemic demand shifts as contributing factors.

Aircraft have been returned to leasing companies, and ticket sales were halted as of midday on 27 October. Rail operators offered two days of free travel (28–29 October) to affected passengers as a short-term relief measure.
