The African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) organised a workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on July 3-5, 2023 to accelerate the development and deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Africa.
The aim was to further the understanding of what SAF is and why it is crucial to enable the aviation sector to meet its climate goals. The discussions focused on SAF value chains, policy frameworks, financing and SAF benefits and how these may help accelerate the development and deployment of SAF in Africa.
The Workshop was held in cooperation with the African Union Commission (AUC), the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), and Ethiopian Airlines. It was supported by the European Union and the European Delegation to the African Union under the Single African ATM technical cooperation project.
Participants included around 120 SAF stakeholders, aviation and environmental authorities from African States, international and European institutions.
The initiative supports Air Transport Growth in Africa and the Global Aviation Environmental Goals as envisioned in the ICAO Assembly Resolution A41-21, in which member States resolved to work together to strive to achieve a collective global long-term aspirational goal for international aviation (LTAG) of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
