Minister for Education Helen McEntee TD has announced a €100,000 funding opportunity for organisations providing non-mainstream music education in communities across Ireland. The Non-Mainstream Music Education Bursary Scheme is aimed at supporting smaller, community-focused initiatives that help children and young people express their creativity through music.
This grant is designed to assist organisations that have limited or no access to other public funding, allowing them to offer music classes, buy instruments, and obtain other essential resources. The scheme targets groups that serve socio-economically disadvantaged communities, including children’s choirs, brass bands, folk orchestras, and uileann pipers.
Empowering Creativity and Skill Development
Minister McEntee emphasized the importance of nurturing creativity, stating, “Music education is one of the many holistic ways in which we can support children and young people in our communities to achieve their full potential.”
By supporting these initiatives, the government aims to create opportunities for young learners to explore their creative abilities, while simultaneously developing valuable skills in music and teamwork.
Key Details of the Scheme
Eligible organisations can apply for a share of the €100,000 fund, which will be distributed based on the number of applicants and the reach of their programs. Priority will be given to those organisations serving disadvantaged groups and those that have not previously received funding through this scheme. Additionally, the Department of Education will consider applications based on:
- Established track records in music education
- Delivery of programs outside standard school hours
- Demonstrable positive outcomes for young participants
How to Apply
Interested organisations must submit their applications by April 10, 2025. Applications can be made by downloading the form from the official website, completing it, and emailing it to [email protected].
The grants are specifically intended for initiatives outside regular school hours and will not cover for-profit companies or professional performing groups.
Fostering National Reach and Diversity in Music Education
The funding will also aim to ensure that the grants are distributed geographically across Ireland and across a range of music genres. This inclusivity is designed to provide more diverse opportunities for young people to engage with music education, regardless of their location or background.
