Abuja Church Food Distribution: 10 Dead, Many Injured
In another incident, a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, resulted in the deaths of 10 people, including four children. The stampede occurred during the distribution of free food to vulnerable and elderly individuals early in the morning on December 21, 2024. Authorities reported that around 1,000 people had gathered for the event, and the crowd quickly became uncontrollable, leading to the fatal incident. The FCT Police Command confirmed the deaths and stated that eight others were injured, with some requiring ongoing medical treatment.

Anambra Rice Distribution: 20 Killed in Okija Stampede
In a third deadly stampede, at least 20 people, predominantly women, lost their lives during a rice distribution event in Okija, Anambra State. The tragic incident occurred early in the morning as the large crowd surged toward the distribution area. Videos circulating on social media showed lifeless bodies on the ground, while others were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The incident has drawn public attention to the dangers of unregulated mass events, particularly those that involve vulnerable populations. Anambra State officials, including the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, confirmed the deaths and assured the public that the situation was being monitored. They indicated that an official statement would be issued soon.
