The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has announced the arrest of 617 individuals during a coordinated weeklong operation targeting the Mexico-based Sinaloa drug cartel. The enforcement actions, carried out between August 25 and 29 across 23 domestic field divisions and seven international regions, aimed to dismantle one of the world’s most violent and prolific drug trafficking organizations.
According to the DEA, the operation resulted in the seizure of 480 kilograms of fentanyl powder, over 700,000 counterfeit pills, 2,200 kilograms of methamphetamine, 7,500 kilograms of cocaine, 16 kilograms of heroin, 420 firearms, and approximately $12.8 million in cash and assets.
The crackdown follows a February executive order by President Donald Trump designating the Sinaloa cartel and seven other groups as foreign terrorist organizations, intensifying federal efforts to combat transnational drug networks.
DEA Administrator Terrance Cole stated the agency “will not relent until the Sinaloa Cartel is dismantled from top to bottom,” emphasizing the cartel’s role in flooding U.S. communities with deadly synthetic drugs.
