Congratulations are in order! Da Brat is expecting with her wife Jesseca Harris-Dupart. The rapper debuted her baby bump in a gangsta-inspired maternity shoot exclusively released by People magazine. Da Brat opened up about becoming a mother at age 48 and deciding to expand their blended family.
“I never thought I was going to have kids,” Brat said. “I just thought it wasn’t in the cards for me. I’ve had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn’t get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn’t going to happen for me.”
Though Da Brat is already stepparent to Jesseca’s three children, this will be her first child. The couple started planning to expand about a year ago after getting married in February. Brat says their love made her look at life differently–and brought on the desire to share a child.
The initial conversations about a new baby started as a joke, Jesseca says, but once the idea settled, they were all in and ready to get the bun baking!
“I was like, I want a little me with you. Something special from the both of us that we can share and raise and love unconditionally,” Brat said.
Da Brat Reveals Medical Complications And Miscarriage Before Her Pregnancy
According to People, Da Brat is 18 weeks pregnant. The couple used an anonymous donor, described only as an “eager entrepreneur” by the magazine. The rapper describes her journey so far as exciting, exhausting, and emotional but a “blessing” above all else. Pregnancy has made her sleepy, but she has no nausea or cravings, she tells People.
“Everything makes me cry. If someone is American Idol, I cry.” I’m like, I’m tougher than that,” Brat said.
At first, the artist said she was not loving the thought of giving birth, saying, “nothing’s gonna come out of me,” but Jesseca encouraged her to get “the experience.” They settled on Brat carrying their child, but both women suffered complications–Judy during the egg retrieval process and Brat before the embryo transfer procedure.
The rapper had surgery to remove fibroids and polyps before the transfer. Then, during their first try, she suffered a miscarriage.
“I feel in love with the idea and then it was all snatched away from me,” Da Brat said.
But the couple had a few eggs left and decided to try again. The Ghetto Love artist is in her second trimester and is excited to share their happy news with fans.
“I think people are going to be shocked,” the mother-to-be said.
The news is still gaining legs on social media. And as Brat predicted, shock seems to be the common reaction in conversations bubbling on Twitter.
Congrats to Da Brat. 48 and it happened 🙏🏾

The response to Da Brat announcing her pregnancy lets me know how ignorant a lot of people are. Y’all too old to not know science exists.
